Eyelids – Blepharoplasty

An intervention to remove excess skin and fat located in the upper and/or lower eyelids and the flaccidy of the Orbicularis oculi muscle of the eye.

This procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia assisted by intravenous sedation, and it is therefore necessary to be hospitalized for 1 day. The operating time is approx. 50 minutes for the intermediate (upper or lower) and approx. 90 minutes for both (upper and lower).The upper blepharoplasty incision is carried out in a way that practically the whole scar, barely perceptible, is hidden in the upper eyelid crease. The suture is done in an intradermal way and can usually be removed on the 4th postoperative day.

The lower blepharoplasty incision can be made:

And therefore barely noticeable. The suture is made with tiny stitches that often fall off alone. It is the only alternative when the lower eyelid presents excess of fat but also of skin.

After the intervention, the patient is admitted to the clinic for a few hours to then return home the same day. It is recommended to apply a cold compress (silicone containers that are introduced in the fridge) locally on the eyelid area in order to minimize swelling and diminish bruising (small bruises) that may appear. Based on this, it is possible to recover normal activity within a few days.

Through the upper blepharoplasty incision a section of the corrugator and pyramidal muscles can be moved to eliminate glabellar lines (between the eyebrows). There are other non-definitive treatments such as a botulinum toxin injection (Vistabel®, commonly known as Botox®), which are also used for the treatment of external periorbital wrinkles or “crow’s feet”, provide excellent results.
